Wyoming City Is Trying To Collect

In the town of Cody, Wyoming, 219 utility accounts were sent for collection. Only four of the bills belonged to property owners. Some are suggesting that the town council should think about holding property owners responsible for utility costs that their renters left unpaid. A policy like that could have added $180,000 to the city budget during the past five years, and furthermore, other utility users are subsidizing those that don’t pay their bills.

Landlords are offering obvious and swift objection, wondering why it should be their job to pay a bill that somebody else was responsible for. Another plan has been suggested however, one that would require a deposit from every person opening up a utility account.

Protecting Yourself Against Debt Collection Scams

The government is stepping up to bat as collection scams rise. In the news recently, Buffalo New York has been home to a number of unlawful debt collection practices, and police have arrested at least twelve people who have broken regulations. Although the vast majority of collection agencies are legitimate and good for the economy, there has been a rising amount of deceptive and illegal practices.

In Buffalo, people have been caught calling up debtors and posing as law enforcement. They have threatened to send people that owe money in jail, or even take child custody away from them. And it doesn’t stop there.

Cash versus Debit

In the midst of a recession, consumers appear to be racking up more and more debt and spending money outside of their means. There are numerous reasons why credit cards could hurt you financially, but a debit card could be what is putting you over the limit.

A good idea is to go to the bank, take out enough money to last you a week and then try to subsist on that budget. Experts believe that relying on paper money in the wallet instead of plastic will boost budget discipline and reduce purchases that are made by impulse. By relying on only ten, twenty or even fifty dollar bills, you tend to buy only what is necessary as opposed to what you think you want or need.

Know The Score: What’s Up With Your Credit Report?

Your credit score can be likened to your criminal record. Both will follow you around for a very long time, and both are supposed reflections of the person you are. Only you and perhaps your attorney will know your criminal record. But your credit score can be pulled when you apply for a credit card, or go to get a new car, or even try to move in to a new place.

For those not in the know, your credit score is based on a number system between 300 and 850. A secret formula (OK a mathematical algorithm) determines what your number should be. Experts and creditors agree that your credit score is said to be a very accurate prediction of how likely you are to pay off your bills.
